Technical · Busan, Korea
Location: Port of Busan area, South Korea (on site at the shipyard)
Employment type: Fixed-term, project-based (approximately 8 to 10 months)
Eyonzy Recruitment is hiring an Assistant Technical Superintendent for a US-headquartered shipowner and logistics provider, to act as its on-site technical representative for a vessel repair project in the Port of Busan area. This is a fixed-term engagement running from the vessel's arrival at the yard through sea trials and redelivery, expected to last 8 to 10 months. It suits a bilingual marine engineer or deck officer with ship repair or dry docking experience who wants to lead an owner's interests on site.
Our client is a US-headquartered maritime transportation and logistics provider, operating cargo services for commercial and specialist customers worldwide, often in remote and demanding environments. It is now managing a major repair project on one of its vessels at a shipyard in the Busan area.
As Assistant Technical Superintendent, you will be the owner's eyes and ears on site, overseeing the repair work and acting as the main link between the owner, the shipyard, class and vendors. You will report to the Fleet Technical Director.
This is a hands-on, yard-based role. Working hours follow the shipyard schedule and the needs of the project, and the role ends when the vessel is redelivered.
You will oversee the repair scope from the vessel's arrival at the yard through sea trials and redelivery, tracking progress against the agreed schedule and specifications. You will monitor the quality of the yard's work and confirm repairs meet the technical specifications and the owner's standards. You will track repair costs against budget, explain variances, and review change orders and yard invoices for the owner's approval. You will provide written progress reports at least weekly on status, schedule, cost and open issues, and you will identify technical problems as they arise and recommend solutions, modifications or scope changes.
You will coordinate with class surveyors and flag representatives so that all required surveys, inspections and certificates are completed and valid at redelivery. You will monitor shipyard safety practices around the vessel, report incidents and near misses, and support risk assessments and incident investigations, preparing the related reports.
You will be the communication link between the owner, in English, and the shipyard management, subcontractors and vendors, in Korean. You will coordinate the sourcing of technical supplies and spares with the owner's supply department, and escalate promptly any issue that needs an owner decision or approval.
You will be fluent in English and Korean, both written and spoken; this is essential. You will have seagoing experience on commercial vessels, for example as a licensed marine engineer or deck officer, and ideally at least 4 years of relevant marine technical experience. A maritime academy qualification or a degree in marine engineering, naval architecture or a related discipline is preferred.
Project management experience on ship repair, dry docking or newbuild projects is preferred. You will be familiar with class and flag survey requirements, and US-flag experience would be an advantage. You will be confident with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Teams, Word and Excel.
You will have a strong eye for detail, sound independent judgement and the ability to handle confidential information professionally. You must already hold the right to work in the Republic of Korea, as visa sponsorship is not available.
